Weekly Course Outline

Week 1: Introduction to acrylic painting basics, including but not limited to brush strokes, sponges and their use, colour mixing techniques all while learning to blend the colours smoothly. Introduction to mindfulness as a superpower and therapy for the mind, body and soul.

Week 2: Exploring different techniques of creating interesting backgrounds in acrylic painting using brushes and sponges; incorporating mindfulness and breathing techniques while learning to follow your own intuition leaving behind the self-critique.

Week 3: Learning drip technique to create mist and depth in a painting while mindfully creating layers on top of layers and seeing the painting evolve with every layer applied; just like a tree trunk grows layers of rings as it evolves year after year.

Week 4: Exploring textures and the use of different mediums to create interesting textures to enhance the background and learning how that forms the foundation of our intuitive acrylic painting; just like the painting of our lives needs a strong foundation of being grounded in who we are so as to grow spiritually and harness our soul power.

Week 5: Learning to create impressions using palette knives, brushes, gel mediums and acrylic paints. Bringing things in focus, expressing your true self freely using thick textures and changing the perspective often initiates transformation and a positive shift in mindset.

Week 6: Introduction to the world of metallics! Learning to use the metallics to enhance the beauty of the artwork brings joy to the heart, especially when the light bounces off the artwork giving it a unique look from different angles. Such is the power of your soul when mindfulness and intuitive art helps your true self shine through even amidst adversities.

Week 7: Creating a blooming flower using heavy textures and palette knives, adding special marks, beads and other materials to enhance the texture while mindfully watching it evolve. The process of losing yourself while creating textures is meditative and brings healing to the soul.

Week 8: Painting the textured flower, learning to blend colours and appropriately using metallics to create interest. Adding a touch of sparkle to remind us that life becomes quite dull without the little sparkles in life – the moments lived in the present that make life worth living.

Week 9: Wrapping up the unfinished paintings, seeing them from a different perspective, giving them their names and expressing in words the emotional transformation that happened during the journey of creating intuitive art and learning the art of meditating while creating art.

Week 10: Wrapping up the unfinished paintings and getting ready to enjoy it for years to come as a daily reminder of being mindful and tracking your emotions so as to harness the soul power and let it shine through even amidst adversities.

Acrylic Mixed Media Painting Materials Required

Supports and grounds options: You can use stretched canvas, birch wood panel or canvas board (gessoed ahead of time) to paint on. It is recommended to have at least one surface to use during each class time.

Palette options: You can use a formal wooden artists’ palette, or a palette book with disposable pages, a plastic palette or just a large disposable paper plate.

Brushes: A variety of flats, brights, rounds, fans, sponge. It is not necessary to purchase the most expensive brushes to paint with. It is necessary to have a range of sizes. Be sure to have some fine brushes for detailed work. I use acrylic/oil painting brushes or watercolour brushes.

Paint: (purchase the best quality paint you can afford) I would avoid the very cheapest paint as it will be frustrating and won’t give you the desired effect. Student grade paint is fine. Pick the ones that make your soul happy. It’s always good to have the primary colours on hand.

Drawing materials: Water soluble graphite or colour pencils, eraser

Miscellaneous: Palette knives, sponges, rags (paper towel), plastic container for water.
